Things To Do In Paris

While some international cities are more renowned for their visitor attractions or for innate natural beauty Paris is most defiantly a city of architecture and art. The French capital contains some of the most iconic monuments in the world as well as some of its most prestigious cultural institutions. At CityXplora we believe the best things to do in Paris present its greatest strengths in their finest lights.

The Big Bus Paris open-top sightseeing bus tour lifts you above the busy streets and gives you an ideal panoramic platform from which to view the local favourites. Due to the hop-on hop-off nature of the service you're free to come and go at various stops for 24-48 hours.

Tours set off from the front of the Eiffel Tower and head down the Camp de Mars towards the opulent Palais Garnier. From here the route takes a southerly turn in the direction of the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral. The second leg of the tour route circles northwards towards the Arc de Triomphe. You'll naturally pass along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, a boulevard of unparalleled influence in terms of design and prestige. On the return stretch you'll have an opportunity to stop off at the Palais de Chaillot, a building which houses the National Naval Museum and Musée national des Monuments Français, amongst others!

The hill of the Trocadéro on which Chaillot Palace is perched offers an excellent view of the Eiffel Tower, but for unrivalled views of the entire city head to Montparnasse district. If one of your things to do in Paris must involve a vantage on the entire city then it is here that you can ascend to the glass summit of Montparnasse Tower, with its 56th floor observation deck.

To get away from the streets altogether Bateaux Parisiens operate sightseeing boat cruises of the River Seine. You can book departures from either one of two mooring locations: Port de la Bourdonnais next to the Eiffel Tower, or Montebello Quay across from Notre Dame Cathedral.

Other great things to do in Paris include an exploration, guided or otherwise, of the ancient Paris Catacombs. At the L'Hotel National des Invalides not only can you find the burial place of Napoleon Bonaparte, but the building houses three intriguing institutions: The Museum of the Army of France, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs (military models), and the Museum of Contemporary History.
