About The Casa Vicens Guided Tour:
This guided tour invites you to discover the first home designed by Antoni Gaudí - a building with an unmistakably Mudéjar theme, covered in spectacular green and white tiles. This fascinating prelude to Gaudí’s later work hints at the future of Art Nouveau (Modernisme) in Catalonia.
Casa Vicens was built as a summer house between 1883 and 1885. It was designed by the then 31-year-old Gaudí for Manel Vicens i Montaner (1836-1895), a broker-dealer. It was Antoni's first big break as an architect and allowed him to display his enormous talent.
In Casa Vicens, he put his personal spin on the prevalent style of the time. The house is built following Catalan construction traditions, which Gaudí interpreted in his own way, while also incorporating unique decorative and symbolic elements. All-in-all, it heralds the creative freedom that would become the hallmark of his entire life’s work.
As well as being one of the starting points of Gaudí’s career, the architect created an innovative work in Casa Vicens which was different to anything that had been seen in Catalonia before. Thus it became one of the first examples of the aesthetic renewal that was taking place all around Europe in the late 19th century. It is the eighth building in Barcelona listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the latest to be opened to the public.
