About the Elorrio, Oñati & Arantzazu Day Tour:
Meet up outside Bilbao's Carlton Hotel for 08:30 and journey into the rural heart of the Basque Country. First on the itinerary is the medieval town of Durango, regional centre of the Durangaldea comarca. It's located on the edge of the Gorbeia Natural Park, a protected zone where traditional shepherds still keep flocks of sheep and manufacture cheese. Afterwards, you'll make your way towards nearby Elorrio via the Durango-Atxondo valley, with its elegant limestone cliffs, forests and tales of witches.
Elorrio is a town with a rich architectural history. It was prescribed an official national heritage status in 1964 - the first area to be classified as such in Biscay province. As you walk with your tour guide he/she will point out the numerous stone carved palaces and manor houses. You'll also be shown: the Town Hall, the Gate of Don Tello, Argiñeta Necropolis, the Temple of San Agustin de Etxebarria and more.
Continuing further south you'll eventually arrive in Oñati, one of the largest historic towns in Gipuzkoa province. It's home to the University of Oñati, the oldest institute of higher education in the Basque Country. Founded in 1540 as the University of the Holy Spirit, the building is currently occupied by the International Institute for the Sociology of Law.
After visiting some of Oñati's main attractions you'll make your way up to the Sanctuary of Arantzazu. Perched atop a cliff in the middle of the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, this shrine to the Virgin of Arantzazu is tended by monks of the Franciscan Order and houses a wealth of contemporary Basque art. After stopping to explore the site the tour will conclude and you will be returned to Bilbao.
