About The Gellért Baths:
Constructed between 1912-18 and positioned atop one of Budapest's largest mineral water springs, the Gellért Baths were the height of balneological opulence during their time. Modelled like a true Art Nouveau palace it stands to this day as the principle thermal bath house in the capital's Buda district, Pest being similarly served by Széchenyi.
Gellért's reputation as a medicinal spa has been known and cherished for hundreds of years. During the 12th century the Knights of St John erected a hospital on the Gellért hill site and supplied its pools using the ancient underground springs. During Ottoman rule the Turks similarly sought out the hot water's health-giving properties. It's thanks to this rich endowment that the complex we know and love today was constructed during the early 20th century in the prevailing Vienna Secession (Art Nouveau) style of the time.
Despite huge lapses in maintenance after World War Two, Gellért returned to its original splendour following a complete restoration in 2008. The palatial entrance hall now bathes in the coloured light of a vaulted stained-glass ceiling, the indoor pools resemble scenes from Greek myth, and the outdoor areas are surrounded by lush greenery.
The temperature of the waters range from 26°C outside to a balmy 36-40°C inside. There's also a number of chilly plunge pools to compliment the Sauna/Steam Room services. Book entry tickets before you travel and enjoy skip-the-line access, plus there's even a range of invigorating massage treatments.
