About The Pompeii & Mt Vesuvius Day Trip:
- Additional details are summarised at the bottom of this description.
Your trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius begins at Piazza del Popolo. Be sure to arrive by at least 07:15, as the tour gets underway at 07:30. This gives staff enough time to inspect your pass and show you to your seat. The luxury coach features comfortable, ergonomic seats and air-conditioning - essential for the long drive to Vesuvius!
As the coach makes its way south your guide will talk about the history of the area, its culture and geography, and the infamous volcanic eruption that destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79. In addition to the destruction of these ancient cities the lava and pyroclastic flows had an indelible effect of the surrounding countryside that can still be seen to this day. Your guide will point out these scars wherever they can seen.
The first stop places you at the foot of a path leading up the side of Mt Vesuvius. From here it's about a 20 minute walk to the summit. Take into consideration the rocky nature of the trail and be sure to sport a good pair of walking boots. At the top you'll be treated to stunning views across the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius' vast, yawning caldera.
After spending time at the summit you'll be led back down to the coach for a short trip into Naples. Here you'll be treated to a traditional Napoli-style pizza lunch fresh from the ovens of a hand-picked, local eatery. During the winter season (see above) when Vesuvius is shut off to visitors the trip will instead feature a more in-depth guided tour of Naples plus free time to explore the city.
Leaving Naples it's onto Pompeii, a UNESCO-listed archaeological site that was once a thriving centre of Roman civilisation. One bittersweet result of the volcanic eruption was that it left the city remarkably well preserved. Walking through the cobbled streets you can still gaze into the hollow remains of homes and shops, some of which even have fairly intact signage. Most striking of all perhaps are the statue-like remains of human and animal bodies, frozen in their final moments before death.
Seeing the frescoes and ancient artefacts it's not hard the picture Pompeii in its final few days. Feel free to consult your tour guide on anything you may be curious about. At the end of the tour you'll be returned to the original departure point in Rome (Piazza del Popolo).
