About The Parks And Gardens Segway Tour:
The 3-hour 'Parks and Gardens' Segway tour is a journey around the lush green spaces and lesser visited attractions of Prague's District 6. It begins outside Strahov Stadium on Zátopkova Street, where you'll meet your guide and have a short Segway practice session.
Strahov Stadium is currently the largest building of its kind in the world, boasting a total of 9 football pitches and a standing capacity of over 200,000. Having witnessed many defining events in Prague's 20th century history, it's a treasure trove of fascinating stories. From the stadium you'll travel to Ladronka Park.
Ladronka Park is a sprawling recreation area consisting of open lawns, wooded walking paths and a dedicated cycle/Segway route. It's a popular spot for locals looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the nearby city centre. Individuals and families can be spotted enjoying the site's ample sports facilities year-round, especially during summertime. There's a volleyball court, football pitch, playgrounds, and an eatery called the Ladronka Grill-Restaurant that has its own bowling alley, bar and outdoor seating.
Your Segway through Ladronka Park will serve as an introduction to everyday life in Prague outside the touristy city centre.
Directly adjacent to Ladronka Park is the historic 'Obora Hvězda', or Star Game Reserve. This 210-acre park with its three radiating boulevards dates back to the early 16th century, when it was founded by King Ferdinand I. Shortly before his tenure as Holy Roman Emperor 25 years later, the Bohemian monarch also commissioned the structure that sits at its heart. The Star Villa, or 'Letohrádek Hvězda' as it's known locally, is a star-shaped building that once served as a summer retreat for the royal family.
You'll catch a glimpse of the Star Villa as you Segway around the outer paths of the game reserve. Learn more about its history and modern function from your guide.
Another historic building you'll visit on this tour is the Vojtěška garden pavilion. Designed and built by Baroque Bohemian architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer between 1723-26, its foundations rest atop the spring of Brusnice creek. This spring is reputed to have been the location of the 992 meeting between Duke Boleslaus (Boleslav) II and St. Adalbert of Prague, an event which led to the founding of Břevnov Monastery one year later.
Dientzenhofer made additional contributions to the interiors of the monastery complex, and was also a creative force behind St. Nicholas Church, which makes a close-up appearance on the two Eco Tours night tours (bike and e-scooter).
Today Břevnov Monastery is most notable for housing the oldest brewery in the Czech Republic. Its beers are still being produced as per the original recipe under brand name 'Praha 993'. Only in 2016 did production expand, first to the South Korean city of Busan, then Iksan in 2017.
The remainder of the Parks and Gardens Segway tour will take you past Vila Kajetánka, a garden restaurant surrounded by a beautiful secluded park and pond, then back to Strahov Stadium.
