About The Puszta Horse Show Day Tour:

Hungary as we know it today has its origins in the seven Magyar tribes who settled (along with three Kabar tribes) in the Carpathian Basin during the 9th century. A nomadic people originally from central Asia, the Magyars unified to form the Principality of Hungary in 895, maintaining throughout subsequent centuries much of their cultural distinctiveness and mobile customs.

Nowhere are the nomadic traditions of modern Hungary more evident than on the grasslands of the Pannonian Steppe, also known as the Puszta. Here mounted herdsmen called csikós practice age-old methods of husbandry and spectacular feats of horsemanship.

Your tour begins with a visit to Kecskemét, the cultural and economic centre of Hungary's Southern Great Plain region. The city is famous for its menagerie of architectural styles, most notably Art Nouveau (à la Cifra Palace) and for being home to the Kodály Institute of Music. Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) was an influential composer and educator who was instrumental in elevating Hungarian folk music to a level comparable with that Western classical music.

After spending time in Kecskemét the tour will proceed to a ranch on the rural outskirts of Lajosmizse, where you'll be served a welcome glass of 'Barackpálinka' (apricot brandy) by site's friendly hosts. Enjoy on a carriage ride through the puszta before gathering together to view the highlight horse show. This timeless display of horsemanship is performed by traditionally dressed csikós horsemen, who work to preserve the ancient art of the Hungarian herdsman. After the show, you'll be invited along to the stables to see the horses up close.

The day concludes with delicious 3-course lunch including Hungarian goulash and a glass of wine, 'served’ with an authentic gypsy music accompaniment.

At the end of the tour you'll be returned to Budapest city centre. There's no set departure point, instead you'll be collected from your hotel reception around 08:40. Please notify your hotel address to (info@cityxplora.com) either before or after placing your booking.
