Red Light Secrets Museum:
It's almost a joke to say that 'sightseeing' takes on a double meaning in Amsterdam. There's the world renowned art museums, 17th century canals, and other famous local attractions. Then there's the Red Light District, where our double entendre arises. But why shrug off both sides of this wry old wisecrack?
Located within a 17th century town house in the centre of the Red Light District is an attraction that sheds light on, dispels and titillates certain myths about Amsterdam's home of prostitution. It bills itself as a go-to place for those who want to learn more about the city's relationship with humanity's oldest profession without actually visiting a brothel themselves. Red Light Secrets does this by presenting a variety of recreated settings, multimedia presentations and fun, hands-on exhibitions. Take a walk through the 'workrooms', hear stories from prostitutes old and new in the cinema, and get a friend to snap pictures of your own encounter with the window.
The focus is definitely on informative entertainment, with additional attractions ranging from an overview of prostitution in art, to the erotic confessions booth. The latter is notably popular, as guests are invited to read and share anecdotes of naughty flings and guilty pleasures all in strictest confidentiality. Give the museum a go if you're interested yet unfamiliar with De Wallen and looking to have a couple of laughs along the way.
