About The Loyola Sanctuary & Coastal Towns Day Tour:
Your trip starts outside the Carlton Hotel in Bilbao, where you'll depart with your guide and fellow tour-goers at 08:40. From here you'll travel straight into the heart of Gipuzkoa province, passing through the villages of Eibar, Elgoibar, Azkoitia and Loyola.
Loyola is the site of the tour's first major landmark - Santuario de Loyola. Consisting of a shine and basilica, the complex is dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). It was constructed between the late 17th and mid-18th centuries atop the original medieval tower-house where Ignatius' was born in 1491. During your visit you'll get to explore the splendid basilica as well as the tower-house.
Leaving Loyola, the tour continues through Azpeitia towards the coast at Zumaia before reaching Getaria. Getaria is a picturesque fishing village sandwiched between fertile mountain slopes and the Bay of Biscay. Here you'll enjoy a walking tour of the town's fishing port, narrow streets, bars and restaurants. While exploring, your guide will point out the Arch of Catrapona, a medieval passageway beneath the 15th century Church of San Salvador.
En route to the final location at San Sebastian the tour will pass by the resort town of Zarautz. Once in San Sebastian you'll embark on a sightseeing tour of La Concha beach, Mount Igueldo lookout and the Old Town. Afterwards there will be free time for lunch (own cost), with your guide providing restaurant suggestions should you desire a bit of inspiration.
The return journey should see you back in Bilbao around late afternoon.
