About The Rosslyn, Melrose & Floors Castle Tour:

Prepare for breathtaking architecture, iconic stonework and a rich tapestry of history and legend on this full day tour from Edinburgh. Meet your professional Lothian Motor Coaches guide at Charlotte Square. As well as insightful English-language commentary you can expect quality on board amenities including: air conditioning, reclining seats, footrests, Wi-Fi, USB charging and even a washroom.

After departing Edinburgh you'll embark on a half-hour drive south towards the village of Roslin, on the edge of which lies Rosslyn Chapel. During the stop here you'll have plenty of time to explore the inner and outer areas of this magnificent 15th-century church. Though small in size, Rosslyn Chapel has an architectural beauty and mythology that far outstrips its stature. It's notable for its vast array of intricate carvings that depict such things as: 'Green Men', a knight on horseback, maize (supposedly) and an angel playing the bagpipes.

One of the most significant pieces of stonework is the 'Apprentice Pillar', so-called because of the legend surrounding its creation. Story goes that an apprentice stonemason completed the carving by himself in his master's absence. The master, upon returning from a trip to reference the original design, was so shocked by the youngster's skill and initiative that in a fit of jealous rage he killed him with a mallet strike to the head.

Other features of Rosslyn Chapel tie-in with its recent connections to the Knights Templar and Freemasonry. While much of this stems from popular culture guests are encouraged to learn, admire and speculate on whatever fascinates them most. To help with this the chapel hosts daily guided talks lasting around 15-20 minutes. These cover the building's history and ownership, as well as descriptions of key carvings. There's also an adjoining visitor centre where guests can learn about Rosslyn Chapel in-depth.

After spending time at Rosslyn Chapel the tour continues on to the Scottish Borders, taking in majestic rural scenery as it goes. You'll eventually arrive in the town of Melrose, where there will be an hour long stop to explore as you wish. We recommend that you take time to visit the ruins of Melrose Abbey, a medieval Cistercian monastery where various Scottish nobles, including King Alexander II, were laid to rest. Popular legend also holds that it's burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart.

The final location on the tour, Floors Castle, is a vast stately home in Kelso owned by the Duke of Roxburghe, currently John Ker, 5th Earl of Roxburghe. Constructed in the early 18th century, it remains Scotland's largest inhabited castle that is also open to the public. Visitors are welcome to explore some of the building's grandest rooms, take a guided tour, and admire a spectacular collection of fine art, porcelain and tapestries.
