Realise the startling diversity of the Southern Ocean's underwater kingdoms right within Melbourne's CBD. Hop-off at stop 2 on the city bus tour and arrive right outside the Victorian capital's very own Sea Life Aquarium, a popular attraction on the banks of the Yarra River featuring over 550 marine species.
There's a huge range of themed exhibitions to explore, from the Bay of Rays to the Shipwreck Explorer- a sunken vessel turned watery habitat that houses some of the most venomous animals along Australia's coasts. The aquarium's 2.2 million litre Oceanarium has been dubbed the 'Mermaid Garden' for its awe-inspiring coral reefs where elegant mermaid sculptures bask amidst colourful shoals, fierce sharks and giant stingrays.
Not all of the aquarium exhibits take you deep beneath the waves, as you'll experience during the Rainforest Adventure. The warm, winding rivers of Australia's arboreal and humid north contain some of the planet's most unique and bizarre sea creatures. Get up-close to the world's largest captive school of Archerfish and see if you can spot the semi-endangered Lungfish, a 'living fossil' species which evolved some 400 million years ago. The Rainforest Adventure also has insect displays and touch pools where you can handle Hermit Crabs and Blue Tongue Lizards.
If you thought for a second that the famous saltwater crocodile wouldn't feature then you were wrong. The Croc Lair is a 360 degree viewing experience offering valuable insights into the life and behaviour of this stunning aquatic reptile. The star of the show is Pinjarra, a 750kg croc who's not just one of the biggest on display in Australia, but in the entire world!
Many more experiences await you at the SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, not least the Seahorse Pier, Conservation Cove and the Mangrove Nursery. Head along with friends and family, it's a joy for all ages.
