About The Volendam & Zaanse Schans Tour:

This small group tour to Volendam and Zaanse Schans will show you the highlights of the countryside of Amsterdam. Zaanse Schans is famous for its rustic atmosphere, traditional warehouses and windmills. It's actually one of the few places in Holland where visitors can find multiple 18th century windmills still in operation. The main attraction on this portion of the tour is guided access to one of these lovely historic buildings. You'll be invited inside by the miller who'll provide interesting facts about the building and the timeless industry it exemplifies.

Leaving Zaanse Schans you'll arrive at the vibrant fishing village of Volendam. Located on the shores of the IJsselmeer its lively harbour bares all the flourishes of classic rural Holland. The IJsselmeer has been a fresh water lake since an enclosing dike closed it off from the sea in the 1930s. Before this happened, there was the Zuiderzee, a shallow bay of the North Sea.

Due to its location on the Zuiderzee, Volendam established a thriving fishing and maritime trade industry. You can still feel this atmosphere on the 'Dijk' - heart of the town and home to many quality fish restaurants. Another highlight is the Volendam Museum, where you'll learn about local traditions, clothing, music and more.

After the museum it's onto the Cheese Factory. Here you'll witness the manufacture Holland's famous foodstuff first-hand, and of course, taste the finished product! When you're done tasting you can explore the 'Dijk' on you own. Savour a dish in one of the fish restaurants or another local delicacy like 'poffertjes' (not included). When everyone is satisfied, the group will return to Amsterdam via a scenic drive through the countryside.
