Things To Do In Rome

Considering a trip to the Italian capital this year? Certainly if you're visiting as part of a short break there's scarcely a shortage of new experiences and incredible things to do in Rome. The delights of the Eternal City stream from the depths of antiquity, manifesting themselves in our modern age as finely preserved historical monuments and timeless cultural customs.

As of 2015 we'd highly recommend either a first time exploration, or a personal rediscovering of, Rome's most iconic landmarks. From St. Peter's Basilica at the heart of the Vatican to the Piazza della Republica on the opposite bank of the Tiber, City Sightseeing Rome is better equipped than ever to show you the main attractions. What's special about this year is that they have rolled out a free Rome Walking Tour app, meaning that when you disembark at any one of their 8 hop-on hop-off stops you can take the illustrious commentary of the bus guides with you on-foot. Read more about the things you'll discover on the City Sightseeing tour by going to the tour page here.

One of the most rewarding activities you can treat yourself to is a journey through the layers of Rome's religious heritage. Whatever your views it's impossible to deny the architectural splendour of the city's Catholic institutions. Take a short stroll south-east of the Colosseum down Via dei Santi Quattro to reach the Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. This beautifully decorated building serves as the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope and is also one of the oldest churches in Europe, having been consecrated in AD 324. A newer yet equally spectacular landmark located next to the Pantheon is the Baroque Church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola. Admire its two greatest highlights, the magnificent frescoes of Andrea Pozzo and the painted Bellarmine chapel dome.

Rome's Baroque wonders aren't limited to entire buildings, though you could say some of the best are housed within. On the eastern side of the Borghese Gardens (a great attraction in its own right) you'll encounter the Borghese Gallery and Museum. The eponymous collection housed within is composed of some of Italy's most stirring and iconic Renaissance masterpieces. See the vivid sculptures of Gian Lorenzo Bernini as well as classic paintings such as Caravaggio's 'Saint Jerome Writing' and Raphael's 'The Deposition'.

At some point you'll want to do a bit of shopping in a place that's neither saturated with plaster Colosseo ornaments nor unwelcoming due to high price tags. Okay, you'll probably still run into Colosseo ornaments, but at the Monti Market there's also a plethora of bespoke urban crafts, fashionable clothing, trinkets and homeware goods. 'MercatoMonti' operates every weekend from 10:00-20:00.
